The final countdown

We're four days away from closing, if all goes according to plan. As you can tell in the pictures below, they've done quite a bit of work in the last few days. But there's still plenty to do.

Carpet has to be installed. The appliances are still in boxes. The "man door" in the garage is just a hole in the wall at the moment. It appears they misjudged the entrance and had to jackhammer up the concrete step they'd already poured. Oops! The granite for the countertops is still on workhorses on the driveway. Here's hoping they get that installed before someone drives off with it! Thank goodness it's heavy!

We meet with the inspector tomorrow morning to go over what's been done so far. The paperwork is on hold until the appraiser can get back out there to confirm all is done. This could come down to the wire! We're supposed to do a walk-through with the builder/seller on Monday afternoon, but the crews are going to have to work really hard to get everything done by then.

The movers come a week from Saturday. Here's hoping!!

Here's a look at what's been done so far. I really like the rock front on the garage and the oiled bronze fixtures they used throughout the house. Can't wait to see the carpet!

A House of a Different Color

We picked our house colors today!

The lighter sage greenish color on the left is the main color of the house. It's called, appropriately enough, "That Green".

The darker green is the trim color. It's festively named "Soiree".

The cranberry color is the color of our door. Its surprising moniker is "Bull Shot". (Bullsh*t, you say!) I never in a million years thought I'd have to choose the color of a door. Who knew!

The decision-making process was far easier than we expected. We spent some time Saturday driving around our new neighborhood, checking out which colors looked good. Because of the Homeowners' Association, wild and crazy colors are a no-no. So no turquoise or hot pink for the Schwartz House! Many of the neighbors have chosen sand or light tan, desert-friendly colors. I was quite fond of the cappuccino shades. But we both liked the green colors. Here's hoping it doesn't come out looking too "minty". We saw a couple homes with this color palette and they looked pretty sharp!

Can't wait to see what the house looks like once it's painted!

Home, Sweet, Home

Remember how we said we were going to build our first home?

Well, maybe not!

On Wednesday, we made an offer on a great house.

On Thursday afternoon, we accepted a counter-offer on our new home!

Here's what happened: We spotted a house under construction in the development where we want to live, by one of the builders we were considering. The best part: it'll be done in 3 weeks!

So we made an offer and now it's ours!

Our new home has 3 bedrooms, a den, 2 bathrooms, an open kitchen with stainless steel appliances and a huge backyard (a quarter acre!) .

For the moment, you have to use your imagination. The drywall went up Friday. The paint, flooring and cabinets will soon follow. We'll be documenting the progress with our camera!

On Monday, we get to pick out the exterior paint color. Nearly all the other decisions have already been made for us. The builder already selected the tile, cabinets, fixtures and interior paint color. It comes with some great standard features.

By December 8, we should have the keys!

More to follow...!

Babe, we're building a house!

It all started this weekend.

After years of living in cramped basement apartments, sharing duplexes with spiders and weird neighbors and trying unsuccessfully to disguise the urine smell in a "luxury" unit, we decided it was time to seriously look for a home of our own. Our first home. A home we could make our own. And hopefully resell at a profit a few years down the road.

We'd saved for a down payment. We talked to a lender and found out we really could afford a nice place. We found a Realtor we really liked.

But finding a house we liked in our price range was a whole other story. I spent days covering every square inch of the TriCities with Realtor Sally. Ed and I found a few neighborhoods we really liked. We were even ready to make an offer on a 2005 rambler with a beautiful backyard. Problem was, someone beat us to the punch by two hours. After a few more days of stalking our favorite neighborhoods, keeping our eyes peeled for "For Sale" signs, and touring house after house that was not quite right, we made a really big decision.

We're going to BUILD our first home.

Seriously.

We'd quickly determined what many before us have discovered: for what we'd spend on a nearly new home with "quirks", we could build our very own brand new house. We could add what we wanted. Choose our own cabinets, hardware and paint colors.

I have a feeling this will be a blessing and a curse!

The goal: a 3 bedroom, 2 bath home, around 1500 square feet on a good-sized lot, for around $185,000, in Kennewick's Creekstone development.

Will we survive building our own home during our first year of marriage?

Will Sara lose her mind trying to make so many decisions?

Will Ed remember to bring her chocolate when she's feeling overwhelmed?

We'll keep you posted.
